batman - das erste jahr

So, I started to read and collect comics again and what fits better as to start with “Batman - Das erste Jahr”/”Batman - the first year”. I read the comic in german. The publisher is Panini and you can find it here. Please read my personal, spoilerfree review of the german issue.

Story
This is the story of the beginning of Bruce Waynes crime fighting career as Batman. It even starts before the persona of Batman exists. It also is the story of James Gordon, before he is Commissioner Gordon and Selina Kyle (you guess it) before she becomes Catwoman.
The story takes place in a corrupt Gotham, filled with gangsters, corrupt cops and corrupt politicians. It follows James Gordon and Bruce Wayne as they struggle with the realities of Gotham and to find purpose in their lifes.
Drawings and Colours
I am not an artist, but I like the classic touch of the pictures. The artists seems to be inspired from the first Batman comics in the 1930 years. Of course with a modern touch. Like if a someone from 1930 draws a town during 1970.
Review
I liked it. Frank Miller, David Mazzuchelli and Richmond Lewis did a great job creating the history of origins of the characters. The story and the characters are relatable (as far as a comic can get). Batman/Bruce Wayne is not (yet) the badass he will become and it is very clear that he has no superpowers. He failed but he overcomes his weaknesses and, for me, this is what Batman is all about.
